CIVL 230: Bridging the Gap – Skills for Intercultural Dialogue

Dr. Jacob Ari Labendz (jlabendz@ramapo.edu)
Includes two day trips at no expense.
The course turns on a paradox. Despite the fact—or, perhaps, because of the fact—that global, national, and even local society is more interconnected than ever, we are also deeply polarized. All too often we find ourselves unable to communicate meaningfully and effectively across divides of identity, belief, and geography. It may even be difficult to define what meaningful and effective communication might look like and how to set our goals. This is a hands-on, skill-building course. Students will seek to understand how and why to improve as empathetic and curious communicators by practicing various methodologies and subjecting their experiences to analyses based in scholarly discussion.
